Biography

John Primrose is the Chair of Surgery at the University of Southampton in the UK and Honorary Consultant Surgeon at Southampton University Hospitals NHS Trust, a post he has held since 1994.  He is also Director of the Comprehensive Local Research Network, the body which supports clinical research within the UK National Health Service.  His main clinical interest is the surgical treatment of gastrointestinal cancer and specifically surgery of the liver.    

Professor Primrose serves on a number of national bodies.  He recently demitted as Director of Education at the Association of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland, the principle professional organisation for general surgery and in is now programme director for the Association of Upper GI Surgeons.  He has served on a number of grant-giving bodies, currently Cancer Research UKs Clinical Trials Advisory Awards Committee, one of the main sources of funding for clinical trails in cancer.  He also serves on the UK National Cancer Research Institute Upper GI Clinical Studies Group and Chairs the Hepatobiliary subgroup.

His major research interests are in clinical trials and translational surgical oncology.  He is Chief Investigator of several current research studies including FACS (the national colorectal cancer follow up trial), BILCAP (adjuvant chemotherapy in biliary tract cancer) and New EPOC (cetuximab in operable colorectal liver metastases). 

He has published numerous papers, invited reviews and book chapters mainly on the field of gastrointestinal cancer.
